COMING OF AGE
AUSTRALIA IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Press Release

Living History Australia is proud to announce an exciting new addition to our program -  ‘Coming of Age – Australia in the Twentieth Century’. This program has been developed based on the Guide to the Teaching of Australian History released by the Federal Government in 2007 which emerged from the August 2006 Australian History Summit.

Coming of Age focuses on Australia’s recent history and is only available as a 2-3 hour performance. We have endeavoured to create a program that is informative yet sensitive to the fact that these periods of history are still within living memory of many people in our community and are close to Australian hearts. Our highly experienced performers will bring to life the Australians who were swept up in the events of the Twentieth Century as well as those who were often opposed to us. The performance covers our involvement in World War 1, such as at Gallipoli, Palestine and the Western Front; our role in World War II, including Tobruk and Kokoda and the change of focus of Australian foreign policy into the Pacific and our relationship with the U.S. and Asian region. We also look at the Vietnam Conflict, the rise of Liberal Democracy and Women’s Suffrage, the Baby Boom, life in Australia during the Great Depression and the Dismissal of the Whitlam Government.

Our performances employ the use of various character portrayals to present this information in an informative, entertaining and interactive way. Through extensive research, we have succeeded in assembling a fascinating cast of characters with detailed and historically accurate costuming. Our Coming of Age show includes characters such as an Australian Light Horseman, a Turkish Officer from Gallipoli, a Rat of Tobruk, a German Afrika Korps Fallschirmjaeger, a Japanese Naval Officer, a Depression Era Jobseeker, an Anti-War Protestor and many others.

Living History Australia believes strongly in the benefits of interactive learning experiences. Our aim is to present information to students in an interesting and entertaining way while still remaining highly informative and educational. Our team is passionate about history and are dedicated to encouraging this same passion in your students, after all:

Education is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire.
